How tightly consciousness tracks the brain
Start with what the evidence strongly supports. Everything we can measure ties conscious experience to the working brain. Anesthesia reliably switches experience off and on. Alcohol, psychedelics and caffeine reshape it in predictable, dose-dependent ways. Damage to specific regions removes specific abilities: color vision, face recognition, the sense of a unified self. Change the brain and you change the mind, without exception in the well-documented record.
That is why the mainstream neuroscientific view treats consciousness as something the brain generates rather than something that merely passes through it. This is not dogma; it is the simplest theory that fits an enormous, consistent body of clinical and experimental data. Any claim that consciousness can float free of a brain has to explain why, in every controlled setting, tampering with the organ so precisely and predictably alters the experience.
The honest open questions
There are serious open questions, and it would be a disservice to wave them away. Some philosophers, including Philip Goff and building on Bertrand Russell and Alfred North Whitehead, defend panpsychism: the idea that experience is a basic feature of matter itself, present in some minimal form everywhere. Panpsychism does not claim rocks have thoughts; it is a proposal about what physics ultimately describes, and it is argued rigorously rather than mystically.
Near-death research raises another puzzle. The AWARE II study, published in 2023, followed hundreds of cardiac-arrest patients and found that a minority reported lucid, structured experiences during resuscitation, and that near-normal EEG activity sometimes reappeared well into CPR. This is genuinely interesting data about the dying brain. It does not, however, demonstrate consciousness without a brain; if anything it shows the brain doing more, later, than we assumed.
What would count as evidence
The useful question is not 'is it possible?' but 'what would convince a careful person?'. Rigorous evidence would look like verifiable, specific information acquired while the brain was demonstrably inactive, obtained under controlled conditions that rule out memory reconstruction, expectation, residual brain function, and lucky guessing. Targets placed out of sight during resuscitation studies test exactly this, and so far they have not been reliably reported.
So the honest answer has two parts. On current evidence, no: consciousness as we can study it depends on a functioning brain, and nothing verified shows otherwise. But the deep metaphysics of what experience fundamentally is stays genuinely open, and researchers keep testing the edges. That is the right posture here, neither credulous about extraordinary claims nor dismissive of good questions that do not yet have answers.
