What do near-death experiences actually tell us?

The short answerNear-death experiences are real, common, and remarkably consistent: roughly 10 to 20 percent of cardiac arrest survivors report them. New research shows the dying brain can produce a brief surge of organized activity. Whether that fully explains the vivid experiences, or whether something remains unexplained, is still honestly debated by scientists.

A real and recurring phenomenon

Near-death experiences are not rare eccentricities; they are a well-documented human phenomenon. Across careful prospective studies, roughly 10 to 20 percent of people resuscitated from cardiac arrest later report one. In a 2001 study of 344 Dutch cardiac patients published in The Lancet, cardiologist Pim van Lommel found 18 percent reported a near-death experience, with 12 percent describing a deep, core version. The reports recur across cultures and eras with striking consistency.

To study them rigorously, psychiatrist Bruce Greyson developed a validated questionnaire, the Greyson NDE Scale, that scores the classic features: a sense of peace, the impression of leaving the body, moving through a tunnel toward light, meeting others, and a life review. Having a standard instrument turned anecdotes into data that different research teams can compare, which is what moved the topic from campfire story to legitimate science.

What the dying brain is doing

The hard puzzle is that these vivid, well-structured experiences are reported from periods when the brain was thought to be too oxygen-starved to generate them. Recent findings complicate the old assumption that a dying brain simply goes dark. In 2023, neuroscientist Jimo Borjigin and colleagues reported in PNAS that when ventilator support was withdrawn from comatose patients, two of four showed a surge of gamma-wave activity and connectivity in posterior brain regions tied to conscious processing. Similar surges had been seen earlier in dying rats and in one 87-year-old man recorded by chance.

Sam Parnia's multi-hospital AWARE-II study, published in Resuscitation in 2023, added human detail during CPR itself: many survivors recalled some perception without explicit memory, some described experiences consistent with a recalled encounter with death, and EEG occasionally showed near-normal brain rhythms emerging well into resuscitation. The dying brain, it turns out, may have moments of surprising order.

Where scientists honestly disagree

Here the interpretations split, and it is worth being fair to both. The mainstream neuroscientific reading is that these surges of activity are the physical substrate of the experience: the brain, under extreme stress, produces one last burst of organized firing that the person recalls as vivid and meaningful. On this view near-death experiences are a real product of a real brain, not evidence of anything beyond it.

A minority survivalist reading holds that lucid, structured experience during severe brain compromise is not fully accounted for by current models, and points to unresolved questions. What the evidence clearly supports is narrower and still profound: these experiences are genuine, often transformative, frequently reducing fear of death, and the boundary between life and death is far more gradual and biologically active than we assumed. What they finally prove about consciousness remains open, and good scientists say so.
