Do insects feel pain?

The short answerPossibly, and the evidence is growing. Insects detect and avoid harm, adjust behavior in flexible ways, and some show what looks like mood. A 2022 review found strong evidence of pain-like states in flies and cockroaches. Skeptics point out that clever, flexible behavior can be produced by nervous systems with no inner experience at all, and that an insect brain has under a million neurons against a human's roughly 86 billion. Detecting damage and avoiding it (nociception) is not the same as the conscious feeling of pain, and no experiment can yet directly show which one an insect has. Some researchers argue we risk projecting our own feelings onto creatures built very differently from us.

Defenders of insect sentience reply that brain size is a poor guide to whether experience is present, since even small brains can be densely organized and efficient. They also note that the same behavioral evidence, if seen in a mammal, would readily be accepted as pain. This asymmetry, they argue, reflects our bias more than the biology. The genuine open question is where along the spectrum from simple reflex to felt experience insects fall, and current evidence does not settle it.

The scientific mood has shifted from dismissal to serious uncertainty. The 2024 New York Declaration on Animal Consciousness lists insects among the invertebrates for which conscious experience is a realistic possibility, and a growing number of researchers now call for basic welfare standards in insect farming and laboratories, where trillions of insects are raised.
