Are we living in a simulation?

The short answerNo one knows, and despite the hype it is not something science has shown. The popular case comes from philosopher Nick Bostrom, whose 2003 argument only says at least one of three possibilities must hold, not that we are simulated. So far no proposed test can settle it.

What the simulation argument actually says

If you have wondered whether reality might be a sophisticated computer program, you are in good company, but the honest answer is that nobody knows, and it has not been demonstrated. The most cited version comes from Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom, who published 'Are You Living in a Computer Simulation?' in 2003. His argument is often misremembered as a claim that we probably are simulated. It is actually more careful than that.

Bostrom presents a trilemma, meaning at least one of three statements must be true. First, civilizations almost always go extinct before they become advanced enough to run realistic simulations of conscious minds. Second, advanced civilizations that could run such simulations almost never bother to. Third, we are almost certainly living in a simulation. The logic only forces you to accept one of the three; it does not tell you which.

Why people find it plausible

The idea gains traction because computing keeps getting more powerful, and because a truly advanced civilization might run enormous numbers of detailed 'ancestor simulations.' If simulated minds vastly outnumber biological ones, the reasoning goes, a randomly chosen mind is more likely to be simulated. Philosopher David Chalmers explores this at length in his 2022 book Reality+, where he argues that even if we were in a simulation, our world and experiences would still be real in every way that matters to us.

Popular culture, from The Matrix onward, has made the scenario vivid and emotionally gripping, which can make it feel more established than it is. One key assumption deserves scrutiny: that a computer could host genuine conscious experience at all. If consciousness turns out to depend on something more than information processing, the whole chain weakens. This is why the simulation question is tangled up with the hard problem of consciousness, and why philosophers, not just programmers, take it seriously.

Can we test it, and what critics say

The deepest problem is testability. A convincing simulation would, by definition, be hard to distinguish from base reality, since any glitch could simply be patched. Some researchers have proposed looking for tiny irregularities in physics that a discrete computation might leave behind, but no such signature has been found, and a negative result would not settle the question either. For now the hypothesis sits outside what experiments can confirm or refute.

Critics push back in several ways. Some argue the statistical step, treating yourself as a random mind, is shakier than it looks. Others question whether conscious experience could be computed at all. In 2025 a group of physicists led by Mir Faizal argued, using results related to Godel's incompleteness theorem, that a complete description of reality may require non-algorithmic understanding no computer could reproduce; that claim is contested, but it shows the debate is live. The sensible stance is curiosity without belief: a fascinating open question, not a settled fact.
