Living human brain cells, grown into pea-sized clusters called organoids and wired to electronics, are now doing real computational work. A hybrid system out of Indiana University, sometimes called Brainware, learned to recognize speech and solve certain equations while cutting training effort dramatically compared to silicon, part of a young field its researchers call organoid intelligence.
The capability has outrun the ethics. A wave of 2026 papers takes up the obvious question, whether a lump of living neural tissue could feel anything, and the answers are not comfortable. Some researchers hold that consciousness in these organoids remains implausible for now; others argue, in the journal Patterns and elsewhere, that confident skepticism is premature given how little any current theory can actually rule out.
For now the organoids sit below any agreed threshold for experience. But the threshold itself is exactly the thing no one can locate, which is why the field keeps building first and asking second.
We have gotten good enough at growing the machinery of mind to put it to work, and no better at knowing when we have grown a mind.
