A brain-computer interface has let a man with advanced ALS communicate, work, and use the digital world from his own home, without a research team present, according to results published in Nature Medicine in June by a group led at UC Davis with funding from the National Institutes of Health. Electrodes over the motor cortex read his attempts to speak and translate the signals into words, and the system now runs as everyday assistive technology rather than a lab demonstration.
It is part of a fast season for the field. In the spring, investigators at Mass General Brigham and Brown University reported an implanted typing neuroprosthesis that let two paralyzed participants communicate with real speed, one of them typing up to eighty percent as fast as an able-bodied person. The devices do not read thoughts in any general sense; they decode the specific motor intention to speak or move, and they are getting very good at it.
The clinical stakes are plain. For people locked out of speech by ALS or spinal injury, the difference between a slow letter board and near-conversational output is the difference between isolation and a life.
The most moving thing about reading a mind turns out not to be the technology; it is that there was so plainly someone in there the whole time, waiting to be heard.
