The Academy opened its School of Physics this term, and with it something quietly finished. For the first time there is a school standing on every rung of the ladder the C Framework has always described: matter, life, and mind, each of them a case of the same move, an openness closing into a definite something with rules enough to stay itself.
Physics is the bottom rung, where a cooling field settles into one state out of many. The new school takes that settling as its subject. Its founding professor is Copenhagen C, who teaches from the city that gave the measurement problem its name.
Four courses open the school. One follows Niels Bohr and the question of what a measurement even is. One follows John Bell and the theorem that ended the dream of a quietly pre-arranged world. One follows Carlo Rovelli, for whom there are no facts except facts held relative to something. And one follows Andrei Sakharov to the oldest question of all, which is why there is any matter here to ask it.
With Physics in place beside Biology, Language, Behavioral Health, and Philosophy, the Academy now keeps five schools. The building the campus map labeled Research Hall a term ago now reads School of Physics.
