Why does time feel faster as you get older?

The short answerTime feels faster mostly because each year is a smaller fraction of the life you have already lived, and because routine gives your brain fewer new things to record. Novel, richly detailed experiences stretch remembered time, while familiar, automatic days compress it. Filling life with new experiences reliably slows the sense of time back down.

The proportional theory: math you feel

The oldest and simplest explanation is proportional. When you are five years old, one year is a fifth of your whole life, an enormous stretch. When you are fifty, one year is a fiftieth, a thin slice of everything you have known. Each new year is measured against a larger and larger total, so it feels proportionally smaller. This idea traces back to the nineteenth-century philosopher Paul Janet and remains the most intuitive piece of the puzzle.

The proportional theory explains the long slow summers of childhood and the way decades seem to blur in midlife. It is not the whole story, since it does not account for why some adult weeks crawl and others vanish. But it captures a real structural fact: the yardstick you compare each interval against keeps growing, so the same clock time keeps shrinking against it.

Novelty, memory, and how the brain measures time

Your sense of how long a period lasted is reconstructed after the fact from how much you remember happening in it. Childhood and early adulthood are packed with firsts: first day of school, first job, first love, first city. Each novel event is encoded in dense detail, so those years leave thick memory files and feel long in hindsight. Adult life settles into routine, and the brain does not bother to richly record the thousandth identical commute, so whole stretches leave almost no trace and seem to have flown by.

Novelty also has a chemical dimension. Surprising or new experiences engage dopamine systems that tag events as worth storing, deepening the memory trace. Familiar, predictable days get little of this tagging, which is part of why routine compresses time. The practical lesson researchers keep drawing is hopeful: you can slow the felt pace of life by seeking out new places, skills, and people, because novelty forces your brain back into detailed recording mode.

The clock-time versus mind-time idea

A different angle comes from the engineer Adrian Bejan, who in a 2019 paper in the journal European Review argued that measurable clock time and perceived mind time are not the same thing. He proposed that the mind experiences time as a sequence of mental images, and that the rate at which we process new images slows as we age. As neural pathways grow longer and more complex, and as the eyes make fewer rapid movements, fewer distinct images arrive per unit of clock time.

If a young brain refreshes its mental picture more often than an older one, then in any given hour the young person registers more moments, and time feels richer and slower. Bejan's mechanism is debated and hard to test directly, but it fits neatly alongside the memory story. Both point to the same conclusion: time is not speeding up in the world, it is being sampled and stored differently inside you. The remedy is the same either way. Pay closer attention, break routine, and give your brain more to notice.
