Where does life begin?
There is no agreed bright line, and that is not simply ignorance; it reflects how the world actually is. Chemistry shades into biology by degrees. The origin-of-life researcher Stuart Kauffman proposed that life could have begun as a collectively autocatalytic set: a network of molecules in which each is built with the help of others in the group, so the network as a whole keeps making more of itself from a simple food supply, even though no single molecule copies itself. Cross that threshold and you have a system that sustains and reproduces its own organization, which is close to what we mean by living.
Even our definitions are provisional. NASA, needing something practical for the search for life beyond Earth, uses 'a self-sustaining chemical system capable of Darwinian evolution,' a phrasing associated with the chemist Gerald Joyce. Viruses expose the fuzziness: they carry genes and evolve, yet cannot metabolize or reproduce without hijacking a host, so they sit in a widely acknowledged gray zone between chemistry and life.
The idea that mind comes with life
If life has fuzzy edges, so does mind. One influential answer comes from the biologists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela, whose theory of autopoiesis (literally self-making) says a living thing is a network that continuously produces and maintains itself, and in doing so draws a boundary between self and world. In their view the very act of self-maintenance already involves a primitive point of view: the organism sorts its surroundings into relevant and irrelevant, helpful and harmful. On this account cognition is not bolted on top of life; it is what living, at bottom, already is.
Varela, with Evan Thompson and Eleanor Rosch, developed this into what is called the life-mind continuity thesis: wherever there is life there is at least the faint beginning of mind, and full-blown minds are an enriched version of capacities present in the simplest organisms. Not everyone accepts this. Critics argue it stretches 'mind' so wide that the word stops doing useful work, and that sensing and responding are not the same as experiencing. The disagreement is real, and it is largely about where meaning stops and mere mechanism begins.
So where is the line?
The most defensible answer is that 'mind' does not switch on at a single point; it deepens. Self-sustaining chemistry gives you persistence. Cells add sensing, memory, and goal-directed action, the terrain of basal cognition. Nervous systems add fast, flexible integration; brains add rich models of the world; and somewhere in that ascent, in ways we do not yet fully understand, subjective experience appears.
Because the capacities come in a graded series, drawing a hard boundary is partly a decision about how we choose to use words, not only a discovery waiting in a lab. That is not a cop-out. It is a clue: it suggests that life and mind are two views of one long process, matter organizing itself to persist, sense, and act. Pin down what changes at each step, and the question of where mind begins turns into a map of thresholds rather than a single fence.
