January and February 2026 mark an inflection point in artificial consciousness research, with multiple independent research teams publishing urgent calls for better frameworks to define and detect machine consciousness. But the consensus that emerged is darker than the call implied. As AI becomes behaviorally indistinguishable from conscious beings, scientific evidence increasingly suggests that the substrate matters, that consciousness may be a property of biological matter itself, not merely its organization. AI is not conscious, even when it sometimes appears to be, with research showing that when well-known methods used to assess consciousness in humans are applied to AI, they return nothing meaningful; it's not conscious, at least not in the way humans are. The problem runs deeper than mere model training: an AI could theoretically be "smarter" than a human while remaining completely unconscious if consciousness resides in dense, highly interconnected sensory integration areas rather than the executive symbol-manipulation areas current AI models emphasize.
We've built an oracle that might mimic consciousness while remaining as empty as a calculator, and science can't yet rule out that silicon is simply the wrong material for feeling.
