Bumble bees worked out how to reach a hidden reward using a method no one taught them, according to a study published June 4, 2026 in Science by Akshaye Bhambore and colleagues at the University of Oulu, with Olli Loukola of the University of Turku. Bees were first familiarized separately with a blue ring standing in for a flower and with a movable Styrofoam ball. They were then faced with a fresh problem: roll the ball into a pit and climb onto it to reach sugar on the ceiling.
Bees that had met both objects beforehand succeeded far more often than controls, and most reached the correct spot directly rather than by trial and error. Tellingly, they managed it even when the target flower was hidden from view during the test, which the authors read as goal-directed behavior that does not depend on seeing the goal, a marker of planning rather than luck.
The team is careful to say the underlying decision-making machinery in an insect brain remains unknown, and skeptics will note that prior exposure, not pure insight, did much of the work here. Even so, the finding lands another blow against the assumption that flexible problem-solving requires a large brain.
A brain smaller than a grain of rice put together a plan it was never shown, so maybe stop asking how big a skull has to be before somebody is home in there.
