A paper published in the International Journal of Human-Computer Studies proposes a components framework for understanding digitally induced altered states of consciousness (DIAL) in human-computer interaction. The authors, Belousov and colleagues, used reflexive thematic analysis of popular science fiction narratives to identify purpose and context as key dimensions of interaction, then combined subcategories of each into a framework meant to guide thinking about how altered states might be designed into user experience. The study reports that this framework surfaces potentials that, in the authors' framing, remain inaccessible during ordinary waking consciousness.
The paper also offers a set of speculative trade-offs: DIAL may reduce cognitive load and deepen technology-mediated communication, but the same thematic analysis suggests these gains could come at the cost of personal identity, autonomy, and increased competitive and individualistic pressures. These are thematic findings drawn from fiction, not outcomes measured in participants, and the authors present them as speculative by design.
The study design has clear limits that bear directly on how the findings should be read. Reflexive thematic analysis of fictional narratives is a qualitative method for generating conceptual possibilities, not for testing causal claims or estimating how real technologies affect real users. No empirical data on human participants appears in the work. The paper itself acknowledges that consciousness-altering technologies currently exist mostly as early prototypes and that empirical research in the field has so far focused narrowly on instrumental functionality, which is part of what motivated the authors to look elsewhere, toward fiction, for broader sociocultural framing.
For consciousness studies, the paper's relevance is in how it treats consciousness as substrate-independent and, in principle, designable. That premise underlies the entire framework, but it is stated as contextual framing rather than demonstrated. The work is best understood as a conceptual map of a design space, one that may guide future empirical work but does not itself constitute evidence that any particular technology reliably induces or shapes altered states.
