Preprint restates Orch-OR theory and draws geometric analogies to microtubule structure; no new evidence is offered

A 2026 Zenodo preprint by Andrew Stewart Caldin recapitulates the Penrose-Hameroff Orchestrated Objective Reduction (Orch-OR) theory, which holds that quantum coherence in microtubular tubulin dimers underlies conscious experience, with a gravitational threshold criterion expressed as energy uncertainty multiplied by coherence time approximating Planck's constant. The paper then notes geometric properties of microtubule lattices, including hexagonal six-fold symmetry, Fibonacci numbers in protofilament counts across species, and a tubulin dimer-to-helical-pitch ratio of roughly 2/3, framing these as correspondences to crystallographic and E8-related symmetry structures.

The work presents no laboratory data, no simulations, and no new empirical measurements. Every claim is either a restatement of the existing Orch-OR framework or a numerical and geometric analogy. The stated method is theoretical synthesis and pattern observation. The mathematical criterion for objective reduction is reproduced from prior literature and is not experimentally validated here; the significance of the geometric ratios to any consciousness claim is asserted rather than demonstrated.

The preprint carries several compounding limitations. It is unrefereed, hosted on Zenodo as part of a self-described personal research series, and was produced without institutional affiliation. Only the abstract was available for evaluation. Orch-OR itself remains a contested hypothesis: quantum coherence in warm, wet biological tissue at physiological timescales is widely questioned, and the theory lacks strong empirical support in the broader literature.

The paper bears on the hard problem of consciousness because Orch-OR is one of the few theories that attempts to locate conscious experience in a specific physical substrate and mechanism. Whether microtubule quantum coherence plays any role in awareness is a live empirical question, but this preprint does not advance the evidence base for or against it.
