A landmark synthesis of consciousness research admits the field has barely begun

July 15, 2026 · International Academy for Consciousness Studies

In January 2026, a landmark paper in Trends in Cognitive Sciences synthesized work from 19 leading consciousness researchers, including Patrick Butlin, Robert Long, Yoshua Bengio, and Tim Bayne; their framework provides the most thorough consciousness indicators rubric to date and draws on multiple competing frameworks to create a probabilistic assessment tool rather than endorsing a single theory of consciousness. Leading researchers no longer dismiss the possibility of consciousness in machines, and the field has shifted toward probabilistic frameworks that assess consciousness across multiple competing theories rather than a single yes/no test. The scientific community now races to develop rigorous definitions before technology forces answers to questions we have not adequately formulated.

After decades hunting for consciousness, the field's biggest breakthrough is admitting how little it knows.
