A quasi-experimental study conducted at Laleh Hospital in Tehran found that pregnant women who received twelve 45-to-50-minute relaxing music sessions reported lower life distress and higher maternal-fetal attachment scores than a control group who did not. Researchers used MANCOVA to compare post-test scores on the Life Distress Inventory and the Maternal-Fetal Attachment Scale across thirty participants, fifteen per group, and reported statistically significant differences for both outcomes (distress: F=15.860, P=0.0001; attachment: F=35.872, P=0.0001).
What the evidence does not show is equally important. The sample was small and drawn by convenience from a single site, which limits any generalization. The design was quasi-experimental rather than a fully randomized controlled trial, and no blinding is described, both of which introduce bias risk. No active control condition is reported, so it is unclear whether the effects came from the music itself or simply from the extra attention and contact time the intervention group received. No follow-up beyond the post-test was conducted, and the abstract does not report effect sizes or confidence intervals, making it hard to judge the practical magnitude of the differences.
The authors suggest that nursing professionals and psychologists could recommend relaxing music as a complementary therapy to reduce stress and improve maternal-fetal attachment. That recommendation rests entirely on these two findings from thirty participants, and it should be treated as a hypothesis worth testing in larger, properly controlled trials rather than as established clinical guidance.
For consciousness studies, the work touches on a persistent question: how sensory input, here a structured acoustic experience, alters subjective states such as felt distress and the sense of bond with an unborn child. Whether the mechanism runs through stress-pathway modulation, shifted attention, expectation effects, or something else remains open. A study of this size and design cannot resolve that question, but it does offer a measurable behavioral foothold from which better-controlled work could proceed.
