A conceptual paper by Mulin Qiao, published via PhilPapers, argues that when AI systems guide attention too heavily in immersive environments, they may erode perceived control, voluntary choice, and decision-making authority in users. The paper further recommends a design shift away from attention optimization toward what it calls curiosity-led design, proposing that AI act as an exploratory collaborator rather than a fixed-route provider.

What this work does not show is equally important to state plainly: no experiments were conducted, no users were studied, and no data were collected or analyzed. Every claim in the paper is conceptual or normative in character. The proposed behavioral metrics, which include exploration scope, average dwell time, path-following ratio, active choice frequency, and recall test performance, are offered as tools for future empirical work, not as validated instruments.

The study design is theoretical framework construction and terminological definition. That approach can be valuable for organizing a research program, but it leaves the central claims open to straightforward empirical challenge. If controlled studies were to find that high AI guidance leaves perceived control, voluntary choice, or exploratory behavior unchanged or improved relative to low-guidance conditions, the core argument would not stand.

The paper connects to consciousness research through its treatment of agency, voluntary choice, and meaning-making as aspects of subjective experience and autonomous awareness. How much a person feels that their attention and decisions are their own is a genuine question in phenomenology and consciousness studies. This paper frames the design of immersive AI systems as a practical site where that question becomes concrete, though the connection remains theoretical until empirical work tests whether the predicted effects on agency actually occur.
