Google Bets the Pixel 11 on Silicon-Level AI, but a RAM Riddle Hangs Over Its Own Promise

The Tensor G6, built on TSMC's 2nm node, is the first smartphone chip of its kind; whether the phone it powers can actually run Gemini Intelligence is still an open question the night before launch.

Google convened its Made by Google event in New York City on the evening of August 12, 2026, unveiling the Pixel 11 family around what the company has positioned as a singular leap: the Tensor G6, a processor built on TSMC's N2 manufacturing node, the commercial 2nm process that represents the current frontier in chip fabrication. Industry reports say that move would make it the first smartphone processor to reach consumers on that manufacturing node, arriving ahead of rival chips from Qualcomm and MediaTek. Codenamed "Malibu," the Tensor G6 is engineered for efficiency and on-device Gemini AI processing, and pairs a redesigned CPU with a PowerVR C-Series GPU, a MediaTek M90 5G modem, and a new "Santafe" TPU dedicated to local AI tasks. The AI centerpiece of the entire lineup is Gemini Intelligence, a system-level AI layer built into Android 17 that automates tasks across apps, generates widgets, and handles form-filling on-device, and which Google announced at The Android Show on May 12, 2026, calling it the most advanced AI system ever built for Android.

The commercial stakes are clear in the pricing. Leaked pricing from European retail listings confirmed roughly $100 increases across every model: the base Pixel 11 moves from $799 to $899, the Pixel 11 Pro starts at $1,099, the Pro XL at $1,199, and the foldable Pixel 11 Pro Fold reaches $1,899. The Pixel 11 starts at $899 for 256GB, now the minimum storage configuration, with 128GB models apparently gone for 2026, and a new 512GB option added for the United States. Google also made an unusual pre-launch move: for the first time in Pixel history, it opened pre-orders before the official unveiling event, via a countdown timer published by Best Buy and Google that ended at 7 a.m. Pacific, several hours before the keynote itself.

The most consequential unresolved tension heading into the event concerns whether the phone marketed around Gemini Intelligence can actually run it in full. Gemini Intelligence requires at minimum 12GB of RAM, a flagship-grade chipset, and support for Gemini Nano v3. Early leaks, cited by AndroidHeadlines, suggested the base Pixel 11 may ship with only 8GB of RAM; if accurate, Google's own entry-level flagship would not meet the 12GB minimum for Gemini Intelligence. That would create an unusual situation: Google marketing Gemini Intelligence as the centerpiece of its AI strategy while selling a new Pixel phone that cannot run it. Separately, Gemini Intelligence support on Pixel phones has already exposed limits of Google's seven-year update promise, with the Pixel 9 series excluded despite being only two years old, and Google declining to clarify whether that exclusion reflects a hardware limitation or a deliberate upgrade incentive.

The competitive framing Google has chosen invites direct comparison with Apple. Apple's A19 chip in the iPhone 17 remains the industry benchmark for raw power, with a 16-core Neural Engine tightly integrated with Apple Intelligence, providing a seamless experience for heavy gaming and resource-intensive apps. The Tensor G6, by contrast, is not built to top benchmark charts; it is purpose-built for on-device AI and battery efficiency, and Google expects the move to 2nm and a new modem architecture to drastically reduce heat output, a persistent pain point in previous generations. Skeptics, however, note that Google is not keeping Gemini Intelligence as a Pixel exclusive: it is launching first on Pixel and Samsung Galaxy handsets and will later reach watches, automobiles, eyewear, and other Android products, which dilutes the urgency of upgrading to a Pixel specifically to access the feature.

If the base Pixel 11 ships with 8GB of RAM, Google will have spent a year building a phone around an AI feature its cheapest model cannot use.
