DARPA's VENOM F-16 Completes First AI-Piloted Flight Over Eglin, Moving Autonomous Combat From Lab to Fleet

A standard Air Force F-16, not a one-off prototype, flew under AI control in July 2026, turning autonomous combat aviation into a repeatable, scalable production-line test.

DARPA and the U.S. Air Force disclosed on July 16, 2026 that an AI agent had taken the controls of a combat-representative F-16 Fighting Falcon at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, marking the first in-air test under the Viper Experimentation and Next-generation Operations Model, or VENOM, program. Building on previous Air Combat Evolution flights with the one-of-a-kind X-62A VISTA, which proved an AI agent could autonomously pilot a fighter jet in a dogfight, the VENOM flight demonstrates the ability to transform standard operational fleet aircraft to employ cutting-edge AI. Six F-16s at Eglin, modified with additional hardware, software, and instrumentation, are part of the program. DARPA said the modification automates the aircraft's flight controls and sensors without changing the F-16's core software.

The program's architecture is built around a purpose-designed add-on called the VENOM Autonomy Kit. DARPA said the VAK utilizes a "novel interface with the aircraft's flight controls and mission systems," allowing an on-board human pilot to toggle between traditional control systems and the AI agent "with the flip of a switch." The service began flying VENOM-modified aircraft in June 2026 to confirm the jets and their new systems operated safely, then allowed an AI agent to control an F-16 in flight in July while a pilot remained in the cockpit to monitor the aircraft and take control if necessary. Before flight, engineers used software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop testing to verify that autonomous commands could not exceed structural limits or impose unsafe physiological loads on the pilot. "These groundbreaking flight tests of VENOM-modified F-16s advance the infrastructure needed to develop trusted, autonomous air combat capabilities," said Brig. Gen. James "Fangs" Valpiani, DARPA program manager.

The strategic logic is explicit: VENOM is not an end in itself but a common testing environment for the software that will one day fly truly uncrewed aircraft. VENOM aircraft will serve as the cornerstone for the next phase of AI development under DARPA's Artificial Intelligence Reinforcements program, which will leverage the VENOM fleet to test multiple AI agents in live-flight scenarios, paving the way for human pilots to command and orchestrate teams of autonomous, uncrewed aircraft. The Air Force began simulations in 2024 with one-versus-one engagements, expanded them to two-versus-two scenarios, and tested both within-visual-range and beyond-visual-range missions. VENOM complements the broader Collaborative Combat Aircraft initiative by using F-16s as a common environment where multiple agents can be evaluated against identical scenarios, enabling the Air Force to benchmark performance without building a new prototype for every software iteration.

Skeptics caution that the milestone, while significant, is narrower than it appears. No live firing, no autonomous lethal decisions, and no complete combat engagements against multiple adversaries were announced, and it would be an overstatement to claim that an AI took sole command of a combat F-16. Deeper objections persist about what happens when the training wheels come off. Real combat environments are chaotic and full of edge cases that no training dataset fully captures; an AI that performs flawlessly in testing may encounter operational scenarios that look nothing like anything it was trained on, and building autonomy systems that handle those situations gracefully rather than catastrophically is one of the hardest problems in the field. International humanitarian law was written assuming human decision-makers, and the push toward autonomous weapons systems forces legal and ethical frameworks to evolve in real time; DARPA and the Air Force have committed to maintaining meaningful human oversight, but "meaningful" is a word that will face scrutiny as these systems mature.

The honest summary is this: the Pentagon has now proven it can bolt an AI pilot onto an ordinary fighter jet and fly it reliably, which means the next fight will be political and legal, not aeronautical.
