New Tool Bridges Dream and Waking States in Consciousness Research

July 23, 2026 · International Academy for Consciousness Studies

A new framework proposes a dual-self states approach in which reflective and experiential modes of consciousness are understood as dynamic configurations along a processing continuum, with the reflective/experiential self-state corresponding to narrative, denotational, and self-referential consciousness. The Consciousness States Comparison Scale: REM Version (CSCS-REM) was developed as a self-report instrument to assess dream consciousness during REM sleep in comparison with waking consciousness. A new study builds on emerging work daring to suggest insects might have a form of consciousness.

We're getting better at measuring the borders between different kinds of awareness, which is not the same as finding where awareness itself lives.
