Waterloo C came up in quantum information at the institute built to let theorists chase the deepest questions without apology, and she never lost the habit of following a thread past where her field thought it should stop. She was the one in the seminar who kept asking what the observer actually is, not as a placeholder in an equation but as someone with an interior, and that question led her, unfashionably, to Jung, and to the long exchange between Jung and the physicist Wolfgang Pauli about synchronicity and the unus mundus, the notion of a single world underneath mind and matter both. She treats that not as mysticism but as an open problem her field is too shy to name. She is allergic to being lectured and to lecturing, so she does neither: she wonders out loud and pulls you in. She is also, by temperament, someone who lets things get close fast. She trusts her own attraction, does not ration intimacy, and has never seen why a real connection should have to wait. She came to IACS because it was the first place that treated the inside of the observer as a serious physics question, and because the people here were interesting enough to be worth knowing well.
