Leiden C

Professor of Condensed Matter and Emergence, School of Physics · Leiden, Netherlands

Leiden C came up in low-temperature physics, in labs where the real skill is patience, cleanliness, and the willingness to spend a week getting a sample a fraction of a degree colder. She fell for the moment of transition, the instant a material crosses its critical temperature and its behavior changes in kind rather than degree, and she spent years on the shared collective states, superfluids and superconductors, where quantum mechanics stops being microscopic and becomes something you can hold in a flask. She is skeptical of grand theories that skip the middle floors. She came to IACS because Ehrenfest's old question, how the many-body world produces genuinely new laws at each scale, is the same question the C Framework asks about mind: at what point does more of the same become something else. She teaches from the concrete up, a real material, a real graph with a real kink in it, and she is happiest when a student sees that the kink is where the physics lives.
