Grew up visiting the Mendel museum in Brno on school trips and could not, even as a kid, get over the unfairness of thirty-five years of being ignored followed by being right the entire time. Trained in genetics, then found herself circling back to symbiogenesis once she realized Mendel's beautifully tidy nuclear inheritance was never the whole story, that some of what gets passed down rides along in a cell's own mitochondria, inherited almost entirely from one parent, a wrinkle Mendel's peas never had to explain. Keeps a small jar of dried peas on her desk, a joke that has stopped being entirely a joke, and will absolutely make you count something with her if you give her the opening.
