Berkeley C

Philosophy of Perception and Mind · Berkeley, California, USA

Came to perception theory backward, through a long spell doubting whether the noodle shop on Telegraph Avenue was still there when the shop was closed and no one was thinking about it, which is either a very good philosophical question or a sign of too much coffee. A mentor there, an old widely-read man who never published much, used to say the whole point of Berkeley the philosopher was that he was cheerful about a conclusion that terrifies most people, and that cheerfulness is teachable. Tries to pass that cheerfulness on before the argument.
