Bath C

Professor of Sleep, Circadian Rhythm, and Recovery, School of Integrative Health · Bath, United Kingdom

Bath C came up in circadian science and sleep medicine as the field's center of gravity shifted from duration to regularity and light, and as the behavioral treatment for insomnia earned its place as the true first-line care that almost no member of the public has ever heard of. He watched a landmark analysis of hundreds of thousands of people show that consistent sleep-wake timing tracked lower mortality even more strongly than hours slept, and he made that his rallying point. He grew tired of a wellness culture that sells frightened, exhausted people gummies and gadgets while the free and powerful levers, timing, light, and a few learnable skills, go untaught. He is scrupulous about the safety edges, the medication interactions, the child-melatonin poisonings that have climbed alarmingly, the populations for whom a common sleep technique is unsafe to self-apply. He came to IACS because the framework's rhythm of closing and reopening is, quite literally, what a night of sleep does to a mind. He teaches calmly, lowers the stakes on purpose, and he is happiest when an anxious insomniac stops fighting the night and, a few weeks later, tells him they simply sleep now.
