Every human child acquires a grammar of staggering complexity from a handful of years of messy, incomplete input. Chomsky's answer was a language organ, a Universal Grammar wired in from birth. Tomasello's answer was usage: children build grammar the way they build any other skill, from pattern and repetition and the desperate need to be understood. This course stages the fight properly, argument by argument, all the way to the current, more conciliatory truce.
