Walter Benjamin's 1923 essay argued that a translation's job is not fidelity to meaning but fidelity to a language's own way of meaning, that something in the original calls out for its own afterlife in another tongue. This course runs from Benjamin through the modern foreignization/domestication debate (Lawrence Venuti), using real passages, Borges, Rilke, the Psalms, where translators had to choose what to lose.
