Precision and Fidelity

The trade-off in technical writing, legal language, and mathematics

Legal language is precise at its core and vague at its edges, by Hart's own account of how rules actually work. Mathematics promises total precision and Gödel proved it cannot fully deliver on its own terms. This course tours the domains that try hardest to escape the Language Uncertainty Principle, and shows what happens at the edge of each attempt.
