Metaphors We Live By

Lakoff, Johnson, and the body hiding inside abstract thought

"Time is money." "Argument is war." "I see your point." George Lakoff and Mark Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory showed that abstract thought isn't abstract at all: it is scaffolded, almost entirely, on metaphors drawn from bodily experience, spatial orientation, physical force. This course reads the original argument and the decades of psycholinguistic evidence that metaphor is not decoration on top of thought, but the architecture of thought itself.
