The Instrument of Speech

Articulatory phonetics and the physical machinery of every language on earth

Every spoken language on the planet, no matter how different it sounds, is produced by the same handful of physical mechanisms: a stream of air, shaped by tongue, teeth, lips, and vocal folds into a finite alphabet of possible sounds, cataloged in the International Phonetic Alphabet. This course is hands-on phonetics: how to hear a language's actual sound inventory instead of the one your own language trained you to hear.
