Paul Grice noticed that conversation runs on a cooperative principle so deep we rarely see it: we assume speakers are relevant, truthful, brief, and clear, and we read enormous meaning into any violation of that assumption. "Some of the students passed" implies not all did, though it never says so. This course is a careful tour of implicature, the gap between what is said and what is meant, and why it is often the larger half of a conversation.
